Restoration
Welcome to Bustedbus’ Baywindow and Vanagon Restoration
AKA Nitro Joe’s “Pretty Good Restoration!”
Are we the premier VW Bus and Vanagon restoration shop for you? All the old school guys ask….
- Are you restoring your bus for you to enjoy, your kids or your grandkids?
- Which of these two are the most important to you? Time, Quality or Price?
Why Choose Us?
Body and Paint: a restoration is not just body and paint. There are far too many beautiful “Twenty Foot Paint Jobs” out there. Moving closer we see uneven door gaps, masked off seals and handles, forget opening the door and seeing painted strickers and latches. The days of the Macco Paint job are over. With more classic American restoration shops taking on our projects, we have access to quality craftsmanship but, estimates are going through the roof. The problem is that while classic American cars, like split buses today, where every piece of sheet metal if not complete chassis are available, the Bay and Vanagon replacement panels are hard to find unless you don’t mind working with tin can metal or overseas shipping charges. We have donor bus original panels cut from chassis to work with. This is not only a cost savings but guaranteed quality. There are three basic options, pick one or a combination of all three.
Exterior: every part (handle, seal, bumper, lens) is removed. Rust is cut out and sheet metal welds are butt joints not lap. All door jams and seal surfaces are included in exterior only projects, as are wheels, wheel wells, bumpers and bumper brackets (powder coating optional). High quality epoxy primer, original single stage or base and clear coat options are offered. Camper tops are gel coat not paint.
Interior: work quality is exactly the same as the exterior. The entire interior is removed, while many surface areas don’t require work, every square inch is dulled with scotch bright to assure proper paint adhesion.
Parts: this is the reason to work with us. Bustedbus has been restoring Baywindow bus parts for 25 years. We ship restored parts all over the world, to enthusiast, service and restoration shops. I have yet to find a larger inventory backed by the experience of our team. If your door latch is damaged or lost its shine, we have 15 on the shelf to choose from. No aftermarket junk that doesn’t fit or look right. All of our new parts, window rubber seals etc are German or US made.
Passion: We know buses and vans. We have 35 buses and vans on the property. Some are parts buses, restoration projects waiting for you, and part of our rental fleet. This is who we are, no one else specializes in only 1968-1991 buses and vans like we do.
Our Restoration Process
1. Initial Consultation: We begin with a detailed discussion about your vision for the restoration. We’ll assess the condition of your bus and outline potential options.
2. Comprehensive Inspection: We conduct a thorough inspection to identify any structural issues, rust, or mechanical problems that need addressing.
3. Restoration Planning: We create a detailed plan that includes timelines, budget estimates, and a checklist of tasks. We’ll keep you informed every step of the way.
